【General Introduction】
Shaoguan is located in northern Guangdong, adjacent to Jiangxi and Hunan
Provinces. It covers an area of 18,500 square kilometers, with a population of
3.2 million. It ex
ercises jurisdiction over 3 districts (Qujiang, Wujiang,
Zhenjiang), 7 cities and counties (Lechang, Nanxiong, Renhua, Shixing, Wengyuan,
Xinfeng and Ruyuan). The Han people account for the majority, with some
minorities, such as Yao and She.
【History】
Since the early Western Han Dynasty, current downtown Shaoguan has been a
county-level region. It was China's coalmine industry center in the Tang
Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, it was an important customs gateway. Shaoguan is
the hometown of well-known Maba Man, the earliest aboriginal people lived in
Guangdong. The famous Nan Hua Temple is an influential shrine of Buddhism.
【Economy】
Shaoguan has obvious advantages in agriculture. Vegetable, quality rice,
poultry, fish, special fruits, bamboo and tobacco have become its pillar
industries. Shaoguan is also a heavy-industry city with focuses on metallurgy,
electricity and tobacco production.
【Transportation】
Located on the busiest logistic transportation line between northern and
southern China, Shaoguan is an important traffic pivot. Beijing-Zhuhai Express,
Beijing-HongKong Railway, National Highway No.105, 106 and 107 and BeijiangRiver
waterway have formed a convenient communication network. It only takes one hour
to travel from downtown Shaoguan to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and
two hours to downtown Guangzhou. Shaoguan Railway Station lies on the
Beijing-Kowloon Route. Everyday, over 200 passenger and cargo trains, including
Beijing-Kowloon and Shanghai-Kowloon trains, depart from or stop at the station.

Qingyuan City
【General Introduction】
Located in north central Guangdong, Qingyuan has a size of 19,200 square
kilometers. Under its jurisdiction are Qingcheng District, Qinxing, Fogang,
Lianshan, Liannan and Yangshan Counties
and Lianzhou and Yingde county-level cities. It's the largest municipality in
Guangdong, with a population of 3.97 million. The minority population is about
200,000 with mostly Yao and Zhuang nationalities.
【History】
In the Qin Dynasty, Qingyuan was named Liejiang County, meaning abundant
rivers and beautiful water. It was named Zhongsu County in 111 BC and renamed
Qingyuan County in 509. It officially became a municipality in 1998.
【Economy】
In 2004, Qingyuan gained 4 top places. 1 in Guangdong in terms of economic
growth indexes. In 2005 and 2006, Qingyuan claimed seven more top places and one
second place in the province, which is called "Qingyuan Phenomenon". In spite of
the high-speed growth, Qingyuan maintains a clean environment. The hot spring
and rafting in Qingyuan were awarded one of the top ten favorite scenic spots
for European tourists by International Tourism Federation.
【Transportation】
Qingyuan is the largest municipality in Guangdong with its area totaling
19,153 square kilometers,190 kilometers from north to south and 230 kilometers
from east to west. It is 60 kilometers from downtown Qingyuan to downtown
Guangzhou and only 30 kilometers to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

It is one of the 500 largest industrial companies and one of the 512 key
companies in China, producing 1.6 million tons of iron per year. Its product,
hot rolled ribbed bar, won the international advanced level quality
certification in 1996. In 2007, its ship hull structural plate won the
certification of ship-building companies in China, America, Germany, Japan and
France.

Nanhua Buddhist Temple
Located in Maba Town in Qujiang District, the temple was originally built in
502 BC in the Northern and Southern Dynasty. Hui Neng (638-713BC), the Sixth and
last Patriarch of Ch'an, practiced Ch'an for 37 years here and completed the
only Chinese Buddhist classic. The Sutra of Huineng. Master Hui Neng's mummified
meditating body remains reposed in the temple for worshippers to pay their
respects.

Historical Site of Maba Man
Maba Man appeared between ape man and modern man in the Paleolithic Age
130,000
years ago. Their skulls are kept in Maba Humankind Museum. The historical
site lies in the Shizi cave, Maba Town, Qujiang District.

Zhuji Lane
Located in northern Nanxiong, Shaoguan, Zhuji Lane is the origin of Pearl
River Delta residents, as well as the hometown to millions of overseas Chinese.
In history, the lane used to lie at the main route from central China to
southern Lingnan area, thus enjoying prosperous economy and large population. In
the Southern Song Dynasty, many officials, businessmen and refugees migrated to
the south, stayed here for a short period and moved forward to the Pearl River
Delta. To date, the ancient street, paved with cobblestones, 1500 meters in
length and 3 to 4 meters in width, remains in good shape. The north, central and
south gates of the lane were all built in the Qing Dynasty. In recent years, a
large group of descendants have come back to seek their root.

Nangang Thousand-Year Yao Minority Village
Located in southwest Liannan County, the village is the largest, oldest and
most unique mountain village in China for the Yao people. Originally built the
in the Song Dynasty, their houses were orderly constructed on mountains. The
village is crisscrossed by pavements laid with flagstones. In the prime time,
there were over 700 residential buildings, with a population of over 7000. To
date, only 368 ancient houses remain, with 200 people. A visit to the village
will bring back memories of the ancient times.

Danxia Mountain
Danxia Mountain is located 9 kilometers away from southern Renhua County,
56 kilometers away from downtown Shaoguan. It's named Danxia Physiognomy for its
special landform of red stones.The red steep cliffs look like magnificent red
rays of sunshine, and the name of Danxia means "red rays of the sun" in Chinese.
Among more than 1200 places in the world found to have the Danxia landform,
Danxia Mountain is the largest with the most typical characteristics, the
richest landform and the most beautiful scenery. The grand Yangyuan Stone,
Amazing Yinyuan Stone, tranquil Jingshi Rock, picturesque Jinjiang River and
steep Bazhai Village have made Danxia Mountain world-famous. As one of the top 4

The Ancient Meiguan Pass Road was called Qinguan and Hengpuguan in the
ancient times. It's the shortest path leading to the Yangtze River and the Pearl
River. Situated at the top of Meiling Ridge which is 30 kilometers away from
Nanxiong County, it's like a city wall dividing Guangdong and Jiangxi Provinces.
The 5-meter wide passage of Meiguan was built during the Period Kaiyuan of the
Tang Dynasty (716 BC) . In the Song Dynasty, people paved the road with bricks.
They built the tower on the mountain and engraved "Meiguan" on the gate and thus
the pass got the name. Both southern and northern doors have inscriptions:
Nanyue Great Pass on top of the south-door tablet and First Pass in Lingnan on
top of the north-door tablet. Meiguan Pass is a pivot passage between the north
and south and a strategic road. The beautiful plumb blossoms along the roadside
have attracted numerous visitors. Its special location bordering Guangdong and
Jiangxi Provinces offers rich scenic varieties.

Qingyuan Phenomenon
In the late 1980s and the early 1990s when Qingyuan became a
municipality, Qingyuan Phenomenon refered to the extreme poverty in the
mountainous area. When the per capita GDP in the Pearl River Delta reached 5200
USD, the figure Qingyuan was still under 1000 USD. In the past 3 years, Qingyuan
has become a hot land merging into the Pearl River Delta Economic Circle.
Qingyuan's GDP growth rate tops other cities in Guangdong for consecutive 3
years, indicating an economic booming period. The core of Qingyuan Phenomenon is
"Change". The transit from a "remote area" to a "hot land" is brought over by a
series of earthshaking changes.
Change 1: Change of people's thoughts: from plan economy to market economy;
from traditional agriculture to modern agriculture and industry; from "waiting,
relying and sucking" to self-development and self-innovation.
Change 2: From an underdeveloped area to a hot land. On the hillside along
the National Highway No. 107 Yinzhan Section, 18 industrial zones are under
construction. In the past 3 years, over 2000 projects from outside the city,
with investments totaling over 180 billion yuan, have settled in Qingyuan.
Change 3: Economic development accelerated. Since 2004, Qingyuan's GDP growth
rate tops other cities in Guangdong for consecutive 3 years. In 2006, quite a
few economic indexes including GDP and industrial growth in its 8 counties
(districts and county-level cities) had exceeded the province's average growth
level.
Change 4: Improvement of urban environment. It has successively won the title
of China Excellent Travel City, the Rafting Hometown of China, the Hot Spring
Hometown of China, the Dragon Boat Hometown of China, Guangdong Shuangyong (two
supports) Model City, Guangdong Sanitary City and Guangdong Civilized City.
Change 5: A more harmonious society. Qingyuan attaches great importance to
science culture and education. Profound changes have taken place in the society,
creating a safer, more peaceful and healthier social environment.
The crux of Qingyuan Phenomenon resides in the implementation of scientific
development, through consistent innovation according to the actual situation of

Fengxia High School
Chen Fengxia is an outstanding representative who is dedicated to aid the
poor region through education. She founded the school in 1999 in the outskirt of
Qingxin County and served as the school principal. With supports from all walks
of life, the school becomes well-known in the county, with over 3000 students
from poor families graduating per year. In the county's entrance exam of senior
high school in 2003, 9 students from this school ranked among the top 10
examinees. Chen Fengxia's hometown is Jiangmen, a pretty well-off city. However,
she volunteered to be a substitute teacher in the Baiwan primary school in the
poverty-stricken Qingxin County in 1993. She received award for International
Anti-property Youth granted by United Nations in 1995. She was honored as Image
